Diet Fads Versus a Sensible Diet

Diet fads are a dime a dozen as we all know. Every year there is one or more new ways to lose weight and sometimes it's just an old diet being revived. The ones with the most hype usually get the most customers and people jumping on board to try them while other people jump off after trying it and getting another disappointment. Then what do you think happens? Those disappointed jump right back into another fad expecting different, BETTER results. More often then not they end up disappointed again.

First of all, the promoters of these fads know that people will come and go like they do through a revolving door, but they aren't too worried because everyone leaves their little monetary deposit on the way through. Some other plans that have a more sensible approach also have people coming and going because many people find it too difficult and/or don't get results as fast or as much as they wanted. It seems like everyone today is looking for the easiest and fastest solutions. Others go through because they try every new diet that comes along thinking they have finally found the magic one and when it doesn't give them the magic, they go looking again.

One present fad is people (mostly women) getting up earlier in the morning and going to a weight loss center and exercising. We all need exercise, but exercising just to lose weight is a losing game except for the gym owner. People usually come and go with this approach too because it never gives them all the weight loss they desired. Working out should not be a short term solutions but a life style.

Another approach is the plans that promote "special" foods that they want you to purchase which is rather amusing since all they are trying to do is get you to eat healthier non-fattening foods. All one has to do to get healthy non-fattening food is to learn what is good for the body and then purchase these items from local stores. These "special" foods usually have a pretty special price tag too.

The most important step in losing weight is to feed the body what it needs via healthy food. Food that is super healthy is also non-fattening. For example, one can eat fresh, uncooked fruit and vegetables all day and not get fat. When the body receives proper nutrition it automatically sheds unneeded pounds. There are extreme cases where organs/glands aren't functioning at 100% capacity and this results in weight gain because foods aren't being processed properly, but this malfunction is usually due to improper nutrition in the first place.

The best way to lose weight is to learn what healthy foods are and some basics about how your body processes foods. Then you will come to realize that it is more what you eat than how much you eat. A good place to start is the bookshelf in a local health food store as well as asking questions. If asked, most people would say that they eat healthy, but if pressed further to explain what healthy eating really is, most do not know how to describe it. For some reason most people think that if they get enough to eat in regard to volume, they are giving their body what it needs and this is actually far from the truth. Also, most people will not pay attention to their health until they have problems. The good part is that a healthy diet can correct many problems without involving doctors or spending a lot of money.

Fast Food Nutrition Is For Fat People

Why are so many Americans obese? It's simple, they lack nutritional education and simply most of the food that they consume on a daily basis includes almost no nutritional content whatsoever.

I am primarily talking about fast food and other processed foods, which unfortunately have become the staple of many people's diets. Eating fresh organic fruits and vegetables seems like a thing of the past.

When director Morgan Spurlock first began his Academy Award nominated documentary regarding the dietary damage caused by the lack of nutritional value in fast food, many were skeptical about the end result. For many Americans, daily nutrition is derived from at least one fast food meal per day. An examination of the obesity rate in the United States is direct proof that fast food nutrition is an oxymoron.

Spurlock Challenges Fast Food Nutrition

"Super Size Me," Spurlock's documentary film that followed a thirty day time period in which Spurlock himself ate only items purchased from the fast foot mogul, McDonalds. The purpose of this film was to document how Spurlock's life and body changed when he existed on a diet made entirely of fast food.

The goal of this documentary was to examine by example how fast food nutrition was affecting America. The requirements of the film were specific: Spurlock could only eat off of the McDonald's menu, he had to eat three meals a day and he had to sample every item on the menu at least once. Following these guidelines, he consumed an average of 5,000 calories per day during the experiment.

Thirty Days Challenged Years Of Fast Food Nutritional Arguments

Prior to beginning the creation of Super Size Me, Spurlock was a healthy 32-year-old male. He stood 6 feet, 2 inches tall and weighed 185.5 pounds. He ate a healthy well-rounded diet that included vegan evening meals.

At the end of the thirty days he had gained over 24 pounds and increased his body mass index (BMI) 13%. His BMI rose from the healthy range of 23.2 to and overweight level of 27. The weight that he gained in thirty days took him over fourteen months to lose.

Not only that the doctor's told him that if he continued any longer he was running the risk of liver failure. Yes, that is right eating fast food for thirty days had the same effect on his liver as an extreme alcohol binge.

America Watches In Horror, Then Goes To McDonalds For Dinner

In 2004 when Super Size Me, was released, America watched in horror with the realization of how much their weight issues actually stemmed from their own ignorance and lack of concern. Suddenly America was aware of the danger that existed in every fast food restaurants on every corner is every city; fast food equaled fast fat.

Dinner parties, weight loss meetings, parent groups and water coolers around the country were buzzing with the reality that had been exposed in the fast food documentary. It appeared that America might change its practice of fast food consumption and begin to actively battle against the obesity epidemic that was spreading across the nation.

However, sadly, while the 2004 scare brought about short-term results, the last impact was not what it was hoped it would be. There are many new menu items that offer healthier choices, but people need to realize that even a salad, when it is shipped across the country, handled dozens of times and covered in fatty dressing is almost as bad as the cheeseburgers and fries.

Also people seem to have taken the attitude that it is okay to eat fast food because they don't eat it "every" meal like Mr. Spurlock did. Let me be clear on this he made an excellent point on what that food does to your body, it simply doesn't matter if you eat it once a day or three times a day.

That food is ruining your health and your body. If you want to be healthy as well as look and feel good you should never eat fast food.

What In the world do you have in life if you don't have your health. Wake up America!

Dangers Of Microwave Cooking

Yes, there is no doubt that the microwave oven was one of the eighties hottest must have kitchen appliances. Do you remember how much the first ones cost to own? Look how cheap and common place they have become since. Sure heating foods and liquids in seconds, not minutes, has caused most people to abandon any intuitively negative thought they may have had in suspecting radiation cooking to be bad for you. Due to this convenience factor, denying and not acknowledging the danger is normal. But, there are reasons why the sale of these appliances was banned early on in countries like the Soviet Union.

One of the worst outcomes of microwaved food is not so much the radiation factor, as most people feared, but the almost complete (97%) nutrient loss in healthy fresh food like vegetables, for instance, when micro-cooked. There is also the formation of new radiolytic compounds. This chemical structure change in foods and liquids has been the focus of a few studies done to determine what kinds of changes occur in microwaved foods. Rest assured, however, that although the studies have been few, the changes discovered have been significant.

Hans Hartel, a swiss food scientist, is a man of intense passion, he determined that there is no need to violate the laws of nature by corporate man and his state-supported monopolies in science, technology, or education. Hans was one of the first scientists to form an idea to conduct a quality study on the effects of microwaved nutrients had on the blood and physiology of human beings. This small but well-controlled study pointed a very firm finger at a highly degenerative force in microwave ovens and the food produced in them.

Blood samples of the volunteer test subjects were taken before the ingestion of the foods offered. Then, at predetermined intervals after the eating of raw milk and raw vegetables, or the same food conventionally cooked, or microwaved.

What was eye-opening, and rather shocking, was that there were significant changes discovered in the blood samples of the test subjects who had ate the foods cooked in a microwave oven. These changes included a decrease in all hemoglobin and cholesterol values, especially between the HDL (good cholesterol) and LDL (bad cholesterol) values and ratio.

White blood cells also showed a more distinct short-term decrease after eating microwaved food than opposed to eating food conventionally cooked or raw. Hartel's conclusion was this, due to extensive scientific literature describing the different hazardous effects that microwave radiation has on living systems, it is astonishing what little effort has been made to replace this technology with something more nature friendly.

From the conclusions of Swiss, Russian, and German scientific studies, here are 10 good reasons to ditch your microwave oven for good.

1)Continually eating food processed from a microwave oven causes long term -permanent- brain damage by 'shorting out'electrical impulses in the brain [depolarizing or de-magnetizing the brain tissue].
2)The human body cannot metabolize [break down] the unknown by-products created in microwaved food.
3)Male and female hormone production is shut down and/or altered by continually eating microwaved foods.
4)The effects of microwaved food by-products are residual [long term, permanent] within the human body.
5)Minerals, vitamins, and other nutrients of all microwaved food is reduced or altered so that the human body gets little or no benefit, or the human body absorbs altered compounds that cannot be broken down.
6)The minerals in vegetables are altered into cancerous free radicals when cooked in microwave ovens.
7)Microwaved foods cause stomach and intestinal cancerous growths [tumors]. This may explain the rapidly increasing rate of colon cancer in America.
8)The prolonged eating of microwaved foods causes cancerous cells to increase in human blood.
9)Continual ingestion of microwaved foods causes immune system deficiencies through lymph gland and blood serum alterations.
10)Eating microwaved food causes loss of memory, concentration, emotional instability, and a decrease of intelligence.

Now, I do not know about the rest of you but, once information like this enters my head it is hard to just toss it out. I roll it around for a little while, then, I make a conscious choice. My nineteen year old has been trying to get me, for quite a while, to get rid of our microwave and replace it with a toaster oven.

After doing some intelligent researching on line and reading of this subject, you too have the same option I did in making a healthy choice for your health, and your family's health. Remember one point, our society pretty much runs on money (the bottom line). The corporations who manufacture microwaves make a lot from the sale of them. There is no money for me, or any of the scientists who know that eating food processed in one of these things is dangerous.

You do, however, have the satisfaction of knowing that you are helping others to live more healthy, you are saving lives, and you are spreading future happiness by encouraging anyone to, including yourself, stop eating microwaved food.

Saturated Fats Versus Polyunsaturated Fats A Dietary Warning

Despite a popular, misconstrued public belief in the healthiness of dietary polyunsaturated fat oils, this health scourge on human health has kept several industries and professions lucratively employed for almost a century. In objective, scientifically researched studies conducted over 70 years ago, researchers indicated that the human body does require a daily intake of fats to function optimally but, the type of fats consumed are just as important as the amounts, if not more so.

Looking at these objective research studies done in the past, it becomes more clear that certain industries have played a key role in what oils were, and still are, served up on our dietary menus. The conflicting evidence has either been purposely ignored, or grossly misjudged in the complex role that saturated fats play in healthy human bodies.

Once upon a time in America's history, there was a time that saturated animals fats were our main source of dietary fat. Saturated fats like beef tallow, lard, butter, eggs, were the daily diet fat norms. Diseases such as cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure, strokes, and diabetes were unheard of. In other words, saturated fats were working quite nicely for the human species.

Then a slow and gradual turn began taking place after the turn of the 19th century. In the second decade, illnesses such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and diabetes began to intrude and disrupt American lives. This gave birth to what we now have come to know as new and superior modern day convenience foods, new diseases, and, sick care management.

When did these health scourges begin to seriously threaten American's physical health and emotional well-being? How did unhealthy polyunsaturated food oils end up in our food supply and be replaced by the beneficial saturated fats that were so prevalent in our diets for hundreds of years?

According to Ray Peat, Ph.D., a physiologist who has studied the effects that dietary fats have on hormones for over 40 years, says, "look back to the end of World War II". "The seed industry was in a serious financial crisis. As a culture, we traditionally used seed oils like flaxseed oil, and several others, in products such as paint, varnishes, and plastics. But, this era was ending abruptly, and older compounds such as these were rapidly being replaced with newer petroleum substances (black crude oil). The seed industry desperately needed new markets for their seed products".

A whole industry ingeniously invented news ways to convince a largely ignorant public, that seed oils were so much healthier than saturated animal fats or nut oils. This idea was so appealing that the manufactured food industry embraced it with open arms, despite clear evidence to the contrary.

Cattle ranchers discovered in the 1940's, that when their herds were fed with, at that time, inexpensive coconut oil expecting them to fatten up quickly for market, they instead became more active, lean and hungry. A thyroid-suppressing hormone drug was then tried and the animals became less active, more docile, and gained weight quicker on less food. But, the drug was later discontinued after the discovery of its toxic side effects. In the late 1940's ranchers then discovered the same thyroid suppressing effect of the discontinued drug by feeding corn and soybean grains (a polyunsaturated food source) to fatten cattle on less pasture grass, adopting the current modern day feed lot practices that are still being used today. This is a good reason to avoid commercially produced beef.

A second good reason to avoid eating it, which some of you may or may not be aware of, is that most all commercially produced animal food products (including beef) are laden with toxic chemical residues caused by the over use of antibiotics, and parasite controlling drugs. These toxic residues store themselves in the meat food sources fat tissue. Otherwise, if you can locate a locally grown, range fed poultry or red meat food source with very little or no drug use, these saturated food sources are healthy for you to eat.

Way back in 1950, unsaturated fats were clearly shown to suppress the metabolic rate, by apparently creating hypothyroidism. In following years, researchers looked for the cause of this reaction, and discovered that polyunsaturated fats damage the miochondria (digestive system of a cell) through body heat oxidation and enzyme suppression.

Human studies, as well as animal, both demonstrated that when strict diets of polyunsaturated seed oils are largely consumed such as sunflower, corn, safflower, and soybean, they act like toxic hormone, immune suppressing drugs inside the body. All unsaturated oils no matter how organically produced, cold-pressed, unprocessed, bottled in glass, or kept away from heat and light are health damaging fats.

And, animals that are fed a high polyunsaturated food diet, instead of a free range diet, will not produce a healthy saturated fat meat source.

Vegetable oils whether they are hydrogenated, partially hydrogenated, or not, have been been scientifically implicated to be associated with a wide variety of diseases that have exploded in the American population over the last 70 years.

A coconut oil expert, Bruce Fife, C.N., N.D., author of "The Coconut Oil Miracle" says, when the attack on saturated fats like animal fats, coconut oil , and palm oil was at its peak, medical and dietary research professionals, who were familiar with the disease fighting properties of saturated fats were shocked and wondering why. They knew, and had thoroughly researched the effects on millions of people for thousands of years who maintained their traditional diets high in saturated oils. Cultures such as Pacific Islanders who consume high amounts of coconut oil as a dietary staple, have lead healthy lives free of cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and diabetes, unlike their disease plagued polyunsaturated oil eating American counterparts.

Then, in the early 1980's, just when it looked as if the real scientific evidence in favor of saturated fats was going to be finally assimilated and objectively viewed by the American health field, the ASA (American Soybean Association) developed a very slick money marketing ad campaign gimmick, based mostly on junk science and highly successful congressional lobbying tactics, built upon the the mass publics favor and accepted use of polyunsaturated oils.

In conclusion, it appears that Omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids are essential to the body, as we can not manufacture them. But, a proper balance must be struck. Clearly, this fat must be seriously reduced to no more than 3% of our daily diets. Whether the dramatic rise in cancer and diabetes rates is associated with our high consumption of polyunsaturated oils is unknown, but the evidence strongly suggests it.

If you are predisposed (a family history) to develop diabetes, or have diabetes, Bruce Fife, C.N., N.D. encourages the use of coconut oil. It provides a high form of energy, is easily digested, reduces stress on the pancreas, enhances insulin action, and increases metabolic rate. Coconut oil will help stabilize blood glucose levels, and helps shed excess body weight, he says,"it should be the only oil a diabetic should eat".

It is the opinion of the author of this article, that dehydration issues further complicate serious health issues as well. The general mass population is severely dehydrated. Anyone who is looking to shed excess body weight, which complicates many diseases, should be drinking their body weight divided in half in ounces of pure water daily, taking care to add pure unrefined salt with the water. While food diets are often addressed as the most important issue, a healthy balanced daily water intake is also critical, and often dismissed or overlooked.

Water works wonderfully, alongside nature's other simple nutrients at maintaining great health!

The Appendix Your Body's Good Little Bacteria Factory

A rather interesting new piece of information has recently come to the forefront on the apparent, and positive purposes, of having an appendix, and what that supposedly useless body organ actually does for you. The appendix, of course, has long mystified doctors in what necessity it ever actually played inside the human body. It has long been touted, by medical health care professionals, to have no good reason to be there. But recently, surgeons and immunologists at 'Duke University Medical School' believes that the appendix, does indeed, serve an important function inside the human body after all.

These researchers at the 'Duke University Medical School' believe they have sufficient evidence to back up their theory, in that the appendix appears to help produce and protect the good bacteria in the intestines. The appendix, they say, acts like a "good bacteria factory" that "cultivates and preserves" good bacteria nutrition to help keep your body healthy. There is much more bacteria (or germs) inside your body than cells. Most of this bacteria that resides inside your body is needed to help you digest, absorb, and eliminate your food. These friendly microbes also provide your skin with a protective barrier.

Of course, if your appendix becomes inflamed and infected it could lead to your death, it then becomes necessary to have it removed it to save your life. According to the 'Centers for Disease Control and Prevention', 300 to 400 Americans die, and about 321,000 are hospitalized, for appendicitis attacks each year.

However, be aware that the notion of their uselessness has been widely perpetrated and used as the main reason to remove this healthy organ in the past. And, a doctor may decide to remove your appendix, gallbladder, or any other healthy body organ, without your permission because of this long held belief.

But, would you want to have your appendix voluntarily removed just because an abdominal surgery was being performed for some other reason, in light of this new piece of information?

The researchers of this study concluded that, the appendix is really an unnecessary organ in today's modern world. They theorize that repopulating your gut with good bacteria is not that hard to do. This recolonizing can be simply be accomplished with getting good germs from other people A rather simplistic solution don't.you think?

However, this may be harder to do than these researchers have led us to believe. Probiotics, or fermented foods can be the most helpful to those who have just recently, or not so recently, taken antibiotics, by re-establishing colonies of good bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract which, sometimes, can be quite difficult to do if you do not understand why it is necessary, or how to do it.

The widespread overuse of antibiotics has recently been questioned over the last decade, by many concerned health care experts, due to their apparent, and oftentimes, ineffectiveness. And, many health care scientists are also beginning to recognize the fact that, unfortunately, not all the bacteria that dwells inside our bodies intent is to harm us. Antibiotics do perform a sometimes useful function in killing off large numbers of harmful bacteria in our bodies that can lead to life threatening infections. It is a self sacrificing trade-off, however, as there is no discrimination between the chemotherapeutic killing off of all bacteria, whether it be good or bad germs, in the gastrointestinal tract.

Also, we are constantly putting what little, of a very fragile ecosystem, of friendly bacteria most of us may have under constant daily attack, in ingesting a poor diet. Over refined foods such as white sugar, white flour, polyunsaturated fats, and alcohol contributes to abundant populations of harmful bacteria by feeding them what they need to survive and reproduce.

Here is the kicker, though, the good bacteria in your gut is a very fragile ecosystem. In other words, this highly beneficial gut flora can easily be destroyed, or seriously compromised by common communicable, and contagious, illnesses such as the flu. The severe vomiting and diarrhea that are often accompanying symptoms of the flu can purge the digestive tract of good, and highly beneficial, bacteria.

The appendix appears to act in rebooting your digestive system with beneficial germs. It also stores and protects them until they are needed..

Do not fret, however, if you have had to have your appendix removed because of an appendicitis attack. Repopulating your gut with beneficial bacterial flora is relatively easy to do, if you understand the importance of why you should, and how.

A very popular way to get friendly bacteria into one's daily diet is to make kombucha tea at home. It is a very tasty drink, and quite easy to make. It is, also, a very energizing drink, and once you start drinking it regularly, you will notice many positive healthy benefits.

The amazing thing is, this drink has many health testimonials associated with it. Your results will be, of course, individualistic to you. Try drinking two to three 8 ounce cups a day, along with the most preferred beverage of choice for health, water.

Sports Drinks Safe Alternatives or Junk Food

Anti-obesity, health advocates are at it again. They have successfully won a battle on having sodas banned in elementary schools by the 2008-2009 school year. They are furthering their cause by trying to also ban sports drinks in schools such as 'Gatorade' and 'Powerade' and flavored waters. They are claiming that sports drinks contain as much as two-thirds of the sugars in sodas, and more than three times the sodium.

Senator Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) has apparently agreed with this cause, enough, by introducing a bill in congress that would allow the government to decide what is best for the nation's children, in setting nutritional standards for all foods, drinks, and flavored vitamin waters in schools. The hotly debated topic ensues in congress between nutritional health care advocates and the trade group that represents the bottlers of these drinks. Are they really 'safer alternatives' or just 'junk food'? It certainly is garnering some attention in congress, and for other interested bystanders as well.

The trade group representing the manufacturers of these drinks, of course, are adamantly opposing this bill. They proclaim these drinks are lower in sugar and calories than sodas, and are appropriate, even essential, to young high school athletes.

But, there is more evidence coming from the University of California at Berkeley, that adds fuel to the health care advocates cause, that warns about the possible weight gain associated with consuming to many of these drinks. They conclude that students who drink one 20- ounce of the drinks in question per day, for a year, without sufficient physical activity may experience a weight gain of up to 13 pounds.

Nutritionists, and health care advocates are not at all surprised with these findings. They say that looking at the ingredient label pretty much says it all. Read what the first three to four ingredients are in a recipe, they are listed in the order of their prevalence in the mixture. Most sports drinks and flavored waters consist mostly of water, many different types of sugar, acid flavor enhancers, and sodium.

Bucket loads of money is being spent by beverage manufacturers, on brainwashing advertisements, to get consumers to believe that these drinks are healthy, and essential. They claim they are needed to replenish those lost electrolytes, due to physical exertion. But, there is simply no real scientific evidence to support this theory. So, you can then begin to understand why the makers of these drinks do not want any official congressional sanctioning, of the notion, that sports drinks are linked to obesity.

Children who are involved in a long and physically demanding game, or any lengthy physical activity, and are drinking simple carbohydrates such as high fructose corn syrup (HFC), glucose, dextrose (the list can be quite lengthy), will experience a rise in normal insulin levels. Elevated insulin levels causes a short spike in energy levels followed by a sudden energy crash. This sluggishness can affect a child's overall athletic performance.

Sports drinks also contain enough sugar, just like sodas, to corrode teeth. Physical exertion causes dry mouth conditions, as not enough saliva is present in the mouth to fight off the acidic effects that sugar can have on teeth.

Children, or adults, simply do not require a short-term energizing boost in heir insulin levels in, relation to the amount of mild physical activity they are expending most of the time. Walking the dog, washing the car, or a quick game of hoops does not qualify as a vigorous enough activity to warrant the use of a sports drink. And, many children, and adults, lead very sedentary lifestyles, that buying into advertising claims about the safety, or essential need for such a product can help add to an ongoing obesity problem.

The only situation where a sports drink might be helpful, is after an individual has truly engaged in a vigorous physical workout that lasted for at least an hour. If you are actually sweating profusely, or if hot and humid weather conditions combined with high physical exertion are present, you might treat yourself with a sports drink. Otherwise, there are healthier food options for energy, and water alone does a wonderful job of re-hydrating you. To replace lost minerals, give your body some pure unrefined salt.

There really is no getting around it, manufactured beverages the way they are currently being sweetened are not healthy hydrating fluids for your body. And, they should never be used in total replacement of pure water. If you think you must have a sports drink, try a watered down version instead. However, plant the seed of knowledge in your mind, right now, that nothing satisfies your body more efficiently than plain and simple water.

Good Bacteria How Probiotics Can Boost Your Internal Health

Many medical health care professionals claim antibiotics to be 'the lifesaving drugs' of the twentieth century. No doubt, antibiotics are the most widely used and the most talked about class of drugs ever used, on the vast majority of people and animals, across the globe. What does the term antibiotics actually mean though?

Here is Wikipedia's definition of the word term meaning for antibiotic. An antibiotic is a chemotherapeutic agent that inhibits or abolishes the growth of micro-organisms, such as bacteria, fungi, or protozoans. Antibiotic is now used to refer to substances with anti-bacterial, anti-fungi, or anti-parasitical activity.

Antibiotic's widespread overuse has recently been questioned over the last decade, by many concerned health care experts, due to their apparent, and oftentimes, ineffectiveness. And, many health care scientists are also beginning to recognize the fact that, unfortunately, not all the bacteria that dwells inside our bodies aim to harm us.

Since the 1940's, modern medicine has mainly focused on the killing off of harmful disease causing bacteria via newly discovered antibiotics. This practice came about with not much understanding of the role, in the advantages, that good micro-organisms (bacteria) played in maintaining good health.

Good bacteria (probiotics), is a modern new term used to describe live, beneficial organisms (bacteria) which, when taken in adequate and consistent amounts, offers many different health benefits to the host. Two very subtle improvements are often noticed right away, in a stronger immune system and a healthier digestive tract.

"Probiotics is not a fad," says Gary Huffnagle, an immunologist at the University of Michigan and author of "The Probiotics Revolution." It is really is a new scientific understanding about how the body works."

Do an internet search on the word term 'probiotics' and you will find that there has definitely been a shift, now days, in the way medical scientists think about bacteria (germs). It is finally getting a much deserved, more focused awareness and attention than ever before.

Probiotics have been found to aid with the absorption of nutrients, production of vitamin K, and helps with the necessary and balanced maintenance of good bacteria in the intestines. They are also believed to inhibit the overgrowth of disease causing harmful bacteria, by crowding them out. Probiotics can be the most helpful to those who have just recently taken antibiotics, by re-establishing colonies of good bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract which, sometimes, can be quite difficult to do.

The best sources of good bacteria (probiotics) comes from fermented foods, beverages, or supplements. Probiotic supplements are available in many health food stores either in capsules, powders, or liquid forms. And, while many nutritional experts agree that most of us would benefit in some way from a daily dose of probiotics, learning how to ferment your own foods or beverages at home is a more superior source of good bacteria nutrition. Not all probiotic supplements can necessarily be trusted to deliver what they say they can.

Besides, learning to ferment your own food and beverages at home can be a healthy, fun, and nutritious hobby. Most experts on this subject will agree, that anything you can easily make at home is far better for you than any commercialized product that you could buy. The reasoning behind this idea, is that you will have more control over the whole process in what you are ingesting, and you also have the option of buying the most natural ingredients to use for the end product.

Here is a small list (there are many more that are not listed) of different types of fermented foods and beverages:

1.yogurt
2.aged cheeses
3.kefir
4.kombucha
5.pickles and olives
6.sauerkraut
7.sourdough bread
8.soy sauce
9.vinegar

Studies have shown that good bacteria can help protect us from diarrhea, colitis, urinary tract infections, irritable bowel syndrome, and Chron's disease. Probiotics may also help treat kidney infections and stones, ulcers, and allergies. Some even argue that good bacteria can help protect us from cancer, colds and flu, and help lower cholesterol.

All-in-all, probiotics have been reported to help many different health conditions, from diabetes to migraine headaches. And to think, that as a culture, we have been overly obsessed with killing germs all around us by bleaching and soap washing everything in sight.

We are just now beginning to understand that there are certain types of germs, or bacteria, that are actually good for us, and they are our friends. Will our awareness of this knowledge benefit human health in the long term, I believe so.

Safeguarding Yourself Against Staph Infections By Eating More Good Bacteria Protection

Staph infections, at times, can circulate rapidly through communities. They definitely upset health officials because of their potential danger to harm vulnerable individuals who, for various different reasons, have suppressed immune systems

A certain strain of staph infection, known as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA, is problematically resistant to a broad spectrum of antibiotics, except for a very small few of the most powerful ones. Staph is a bacterium that commonly exists harmlessly on the skin, under fingernails, and in the nostrils of about 30 % of our population, according the the 'U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention'. But, about 1 % of the population contacts the antibiotic resistant strain, known as MRSA, and this form of staph infection can cause a very serious skin infection, and an internal infection as well.

This type of staph infection can circulate rather quickly in common athletic areas such as gyms and fitness centers. This potentially harmful bacteria can be found on sports equipment, in locker rooms, and on personal hygiene care items such as towels, soaps, and razors. MRSA infections are contagiously spread by skin-to-skin contact through an open cut wound, or contact through personal hygiene care items.

A known outbreak in a community should, therefore, have everyone seriously paying attention in keeping sports equipment, and other suspected areas, properly sanitized. Warnings, also, need to be issued in the advising of no sharing of personal care items.

People with healthy immune systems are not as susceptible to succumbing to this type of infection as those individuals who have a weaker immune system resistance. These individuals can become colonized with this type of deadly infection rather quickly. Lesions on the skin may first appear to be a spider bite or a boil. But, experts on staph infections claim that about 25 % of these types of skin infections end up requiring hospitalization. They cause infections of the bloodstream, central nervous system, heart valves, bones, and pneumonia.

In fact, over the last four to five years 95% of staph infections turn out to be MRSA. MRSA can also carry a gene mutation that can destroy white blood cells and infect other body tissues and organs. MRSA infections start out as small red bumps on the skin that can quickly turn into deep, painful abscesses. Sometimes the bacteria remains confined on the skin but, it can also burrow deep inside your body. Causes of MRSA include:

The results of decades of unnecessary and excessive antibiotic use.
The overuse of antibiotics in livestock farming operations, resulting in feedlot run off that migrates to municipal water systems.
Continued unnecessary and excessive antibiotic use contributes to their ineffectiveness of other types of antibiotics.

Risk factors for contacting a MRSA infection are:

A current or recent hospitalization.
Being a resident of a long-term health care facility.
Requiring dialysis, catheterization, feeding tubes, or other invasive hospital proceedures.
Have been treated with fluoroquinolones ( a type of antibiotics) such as ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, levofloxacin, and cephalosporin.

Doctors diagnose MRSA by obtaining a tissue sample of nasal secretions. The sample is sent to a lab and results are returned within 48 hours. There are some newer tests, becoming more widely available, that can detect staph DNA in a shorter amount of time. Vancomycin is one of the few antibiotics left, that is still effective against hospital strains of MRSA. Be advised, however, that it is no longer effective in every single case.

There is some promising news, however, on how you can protect yourself against an infection with an antibiotic resistant form of staph infection, in a more natural way. Regularly consuming good bacteria nutrition, like what you will find in homemade fermented foods and beverages, can help protect you from developing this dangerous type of infection.

These friendly germs, in abundant populations, will help provide your skin, digestive tract, and immune system with a very powerful, protective barrier against disease causing pathogens such as a common staph infection, or a more problematic and antibiotic resistant MRSA infection..

In light of what is not working on the drug treatment battleground scene with antibiotics, which approach do you believe has a more common sense potential to solve this problem?

Flushing out potentially harmful disease causing staphylococcus bacterias out of your internal system with nothing much else, in fluids, but water is another a good way to avoid a serious staph infection like MRSA.

You can take more control in naturally building up your immune system strength, in fighting off many other different types of disease causing bacterial infections this way also. You can make your intestinal system more fit, and healthier, with a boosted diet of good bacteria nutrition and, of course, by keeping yourself properly hydrated and cleansed in adding more water consumption to your daily diet routine.

How To Avoid Daytime Fatigue

Is it the middle of the morning or afternoon, and you can barely think of anything else but catching a little more shut eye? Even simple projects or tasks can sometimes seem incredibly hard to manage. You may even have to work to summon up enough energy to stay alert for your drive home from work.

Anyone can be tired for a number of reasons, but the most common one is not getting enough sleep. But, if you are getting enough sleep, then why are you having these daytime slumps half way through your morning or afternoon?

For many people, diets play a pivotal role in experiencing daytime drowsiness. Skipping meals or eating the wrong types of food and beverages can contribute to mid-morning and mid-afternoon fatigue sessions. Make time for the most important meal of the day, by eating breakfast. If you want to avoid a mid-morning slump, eat a higher amount of protein foods with complex carbohydrates, and less highly refined carbohydrates. Maybe you are tired of eggs, then try high protein food sources like peanut butter, cottage cheese, other cheeses, or lean turkey with your toast. Complex carbohydrates to include are fresh raw fruits and whole grains.

Lunch as well, should contain more protein rich foods with a few complex carbohydrates for long lasting energy, and less highly refined carbohydrates. If you choose to eat only a skimpy salad, or refined carbohydrates, you will then be left feeling short changed in the energy department later in the afternoon. The same effects also hold true when eating too heavily, or eating too much of a highly refined carbohydrate lunch. You will begin to feel sluggish soon afterward because, heavy meals will draw more blood from the brain to the digestive organs to help digest a heavy meal. Highly refined foods are also harder for your body to digest (this may take days for your body to accomplish) and takes energy away from your brain. Also, experiment with eating smaller amounts of food more often, instead of eating heavier fewer times in the day, and avoid refined sugars, grains, and sugary beverages. The short lived and nutritionally empty energizing effects of eating these will bring on the yawns much quicker.

At one time in ancient history (the past 40 years) a low-fat diet was considered a smart and healthy path to take, and was advised by many medical health experts. Today, many still believe and follow this unproductive diet strategy. Unfortunately, following this fat-free diet strategy will also leave you feeling tired and exhausted. Ironically, the reverse is actually true. Omega-3 essential fatty acids, along with saturated fats, are very much needed by the body, and used for a more concentrated form of energy. The newer diet fat strategy idea is to consume way less omega-6 fatty acids oils (polyunsaturated), which are found in vegetable and seed oils, and is abundant in processed junk foods.

Healthy diet fat oils, such as saturated, monounsatureated (olive oil), and omega-3's (fish oil) are essential building materials for cell membranes, hormones, and act as carriers for the fat soluble vitamins A,D,E, and K. Fats also help improve mineral absorption. Saturated fats were once and long thought to be heart damaging but, this fat has recently been vindicated from its villain status. Coconut oil is a saturated fat and has been shown in published research studies to boost metabolic energy, thus enhancing mental and physical performance. Coconut oil has also proven to positively improve symptoms associated with chronic fatigue syndrome.

Consider trying a short vigorous 20 to 30 minute exercise stint (walking is good) during your lunch hour, in being able to help you fight daytime lethargy. A quick and brisk walk improves cardiovascular blood flow, physical and mental performance, breathing capacity, and helps promote healthy sleep. Only get 30 minutes for lunch, don't despair, use other opportunities through out your day to get some physical exertion. Use stairs instead of elevators, walk instead of driving, and break up long periods of sitting or standing with some sort of stretching or walking exercise.

If diet and exercise, together, are not quite enough to keep you as alert as you would like to be in the afternoon, here are some herbal options to consider. Adaptogenic herbs are safe, can be taken long term, and with very few (if any) side effects. Herbs in this class are ginseng (all varieties), rhodiola, and schisandra. Research data suggests the saponins called 'ginsenosides' in ginseng is the substance that may help strengthen the mind and immune system.

A quick mid-afternoon pick-me-up green drink made with 'spirulina' mixed with tomato juice is a tasty treat, as well as a herbal flavored green tea, iced or hot.

The Japanese are leaders in the intriguing, yet very invigorating power of aromatherapy. Aromatherapy has been shown to perk up an individual's arousal and alertness, and helps reduce stress. Use chemical free and natural forms of scent like essential oils, Rosemary is especially good at fighting fatigue. There are many different scents to choose from. Put a few drops on a tissue or cotton ball. Place in a small plastic baggy or jar, inhale as needed. Infuse a few drops of Rosemary in a carrier oil such as olive oil or coconut oil, massage on sore, aching, or tired muscles

Now, let us go back to diet tips. There is no denying that a small amount of caffeine can help fight fatigue but, excessive and daily overuse of this drug can leave you feeling anxious, nervous, irritated, and reduce the efficiency of physical and mental performance. Caffeine can also (in many individuals) compromise regular, restful sleep. Some of you know who you are, and some of you may not. A word of caution, use caffeine sparingly until you know how it affects you and your sleep patterns. Many people do not take the effects of caffeine seriously enough, using it willy-nilly, as if it is not much of a threat.

If daytime fatigue has eluded all of the tactics mentioned above, then it may be time to take a look at your hydration levels. Dehydration is a common, rampant problem around the world, and especially prevalent in modern industrialized cultures. It is estimated that approximately three-quarters of the human population is seriously and chronically dehydrated. Dehydration contributes to daytime fatigue by reducing blood flow to the brain and other vital organs through out the body by slowing them down.

To prevent this problem, everyone should be responsible enough in making the small effort to better keep themselves properly hydrated with water. This is easier to do than than eating better food, and will help flush toxins out of you. Water is the nutrient carrying solvent the body prefers above any other. Water is energizing enough, in itself, to greatly help you avoid daytime sluggishness.

How much should you be drinking in water? That depends on your body weight. You should be drinking your body weight, divided in half, in ounces every day. After about 2 quarts of water consumption, add about a half a teaspoon of unrefined salt to the mixture.

Considering how much water is needed to replace what you are loosing constantly every day, in breathing, sweating, urinating, you get a better understanding of why it is so important to replenish it. And, understand this important factoid, the brain is made up of about 80% water, 20% fat. Depriving the brain of the energizing substance it is mostly comprised of, is an energy deprived brain.

New Hope For Those With Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Age-related macular degeneration, with the average onslaught age beginning in the early forties, is one of the four leading causes of vision loss in America. The other three are glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and cataracts. However, until recently AMD left its victims no hope in regaining lost vision.

The disease affects the macula, or the sweet spot, at the center of the retina. These light sensitive cells are critical to reading, driving, and recognizing faces. The early 'dry' form is the more common condition of this disease, affecting 80% of all age-related macular degeneration sufferers.

The less common or 'wet' form develops when new blood vessels sprout behind the macula, resulting in bleeding and leaking distorting its shape. The wet form responds somewhat well to a new drug therapy. The drug used is called 'Lucentis', it inhibits protein, reducing the destructive new blood vessels from growing. The drug is given by injections and may be needed indefinitely, does not work for everyone, and common of all drugs, carries certain risks.

In the meantime, the outlook is less exciting for those with the more common 'dry' form of AMD. The only thing on offer here is nutritional therapy. Nutritional therapy can be started in the early stages of AMD and will also help prevent the development of the less common, but more serious advanced 'wet' form of this eye affliction.

Conclusive risk factors associated with developing AMD are:
1.tobacco smoking
2.elevated blood glucose levels, (as observed in
obesity and diabetes)
3.high blood pressure
4.low physical activity
5.a high dietary intake of refined sugar

Nutrient therapy thus far is the only technique that shows any real promise. This science has not been fully completed yet, but ongoing studies being conducted throughout North America and other western nations are continuing to draw their conclusions. There seems to be a lot of hope being placed on the many different natural nutrients that serve a positive role in maintaining or restoring healthy normal eyesight.

Nutrients that are found in fresh raw produce and other natural food sources that are thought to be beneficial in healthy eye vision include:

1.antioxidant vitamins A, C, and E
2.phytonutrients like lutein, lycopene, beta-carotene to name a small few, and many others yet to be identified
3.omega-3 essential fatty acid found in cold water fish
4.adequate daily and consistent fluid intake ( mostly pure water)

The over consumption of omega-6 essential fatty acids found in vegetable oils is associated with an inflammatory internal reaction within the body and increases the risk of developing AMD.

Saving one's eyesight the nutritional way seems to fall into alignment with many other physical health maladies, that seem to affect or are interconnected to one another. Unlike drugs or laser eye treatments, whole food nutrition will not have a speedy effect in restoring vision. When you opt out to building up a natural protective strategy such as this, you simply must expect to have to wait. Realistically, it will take on average 3 to 4 months for body cells to turn around and improve naturally.

Do not overlook one important step in curing your early or progressive stages of AMD. In taking the full responsibility that is necessary for this winning outcome to occur, you must absolutely be committed to drinking your body's daily requirement of fluids in pure water. With this increased water consumption, the need for pure unrefined salt is also necessary. Be sure to include these two important body nutrients.

As fresh raw fruits and vegetables are some very amazing vision promoting tools, they also are largely made up of water, they are perfect selections for in between meal snacks. Perfect choices in producing a 180 degree turn around of one's eyesight.

Learn to love them and your body will reflect it back in response. You certainly can eat and drink your way back to better eye vision naturally. Ready to let those pesky reading glasses go, expensive laser eye treatments, how about evasive drug treatments? If you are the patient type, eating is believing!

Natural Weight Loss Tips

A Spoonful of Sugar a Day - Can it Keep the Doctor Away?

'Sugar' might as well be a four-letter word the way science and pseudo-science has demonized it over the years. The nemesis of dieters everywhere, sugar has become the scapegoat for obesity as well as a number of other diseases and conditions. People have been told by nutritionists that carbohydrates are bad, sugar is bad, and now there seems to be a Diet version of practically everything on the market. But is sugar really as evil as everyone thinks it is?

A scientific field called glycoscience and/or glycobiology disagrees with much of the popular opinion about sugar, and not just regarding weight loss. There is an ever-increasing amount of research that suggests certain types of sugars can have an enormous benefit to our health, including boosting human immune response, to inhibiting cancerous tumor growth.

'Glyco' is derived from the Greek word 'sweet' and refers to monosaccharides or sugars. For decades, Scientists have known about the link between sugars, carbohydrates and their effect in boosting energy. It's no secret that carbs and sugars are our main source of fuel, and help us perform our everyday tasks, as well as provide the oomph we need to hit the ol' stairclimber. But especially since the popularity of the Atkins diet which demonizes carbs and sugars, many people have been missing out on the benefits of the sweet stuff.

Glycoscience is amassing more and more evidence that the role of carbs is crucial to maintaining the healthy function of the body. Most people are familiar with the term 'glucose' but there are over 200 monosaccharides found in plants and, of those, less than ten are used by the body to maintain a healthy equilibrium. Some other sugars are: mannose, galactose, xylose, fucose, N-acetylglucosamine, N-acetylgalactosamine, and sialic acid (N-acetylneuraminic acid or NANA).

Recent scientific evidence is showing that these sugars and carbs help us on a cellular level. They allow our cells to better interact with each other, thus making every basic bodily function more efficient and effective. This cellular response from carbs flies in the face of the fad low-carb diets that are finally beginning to wan. What was formerly a no-carb or low-carb mentality really should be a "right-carb" mentality. With the right carbs and sugars, the human body becomes a well-oiled machine that can live longer, and more importantly live better than ever before.

Human beings, from a purely biological standpoint, have not really changed in thousands of years. We are still basically the same beings that survived on mainly plants for millennia. And yet the food we eat today is a far cry from the food we ate thousands of years ago or even as much as 50 years ago. Genetic engineering, growth hormones, and preservatives are now an integral part of almost everything we eat. Especially with fast food, and enormous portion of the population eats foods that are virtually bereft of nutrients. Empty calories are on the diets of millions of people every single day.

Now although most people would agree with that statement, most of them would heartily disagree that sugar and carbs are the answer to many of the health questions plaguing our modern society. Well surprise everybody...sugar might be the way to go. Again though, they have to be the right sugars; the monosaccharides found in plants, not the table sugar you find in your local grocery store.

So the question remains, where do we get these beneficial sugars? Simple. The company is called Mannatech. Publicly traded on the NASDAQ, Mannatech's main product is something called Ambrotose, and most recently, Advanced Ambrotose. This product has been heralded by many in the scientific community as the next big thing in the multi-billion dollar supplement industry.

When you see how many diseases are preventable simply by an alteration in diet and taking proper supplements, it's heartbreaking to see the thousands that are unaware of the damage they are doing to themselves by rigorously maintaining their strict low-carb regimes. People hear this...CARBS ARE GOOD...as long as they are the right carbs and sugars. This point has to be made again and again until people start listening and taking charge if their own well-being.

Note: Glyconutrients are not intended to heal, treat, or cure any disease.

Give Your Allergies A Sniffle-Free Spring Address Possible Nutrient Deficiencies

Allergies are more than an inconvenience, they make most sufferers tired and irritable, unable to concentrate or learn effectively, and process information less efficiently. Until I got my allergies under control, I did not know how the whole experience had effected my life.

As a child I was fortunate not to know what an allergy was. But by the age of 25, I suddenly had an allergic reaction to something that ended in a sinus infection. From that moment on, and several sinus infections later, I continued to suffer the intermittent seasonal sneezing and congestion, sniffling, and coughing symptoms of allergies for an additional 20 years.

Was it reassuring that allergic rhinitis has had such an enormous and negative impact on the general population in the U.S.? No, and treating the symptoms of my allergies with chemical solutions to counter the release of histamine by messing around with my body's natural water system regulator substance was no real solution either.

Drugs that block your body's natural release of histamine by using drugs, called 'histamine blockers' or (anti-histamines), cause your body to become more dependent on these substances. It also messes with your body's natural water regulating system, and it is not curing your allergies by merely masking the symptoms.

Roughly 40 million people in the U.S. suffer from allergies, thousands do not even realize they do. Many suspect they have allergies and ignore their symptoms or routinely self medicate. Self medicating can become a vicious cycle of decongestant pills, cough syrups, and nose sprays. Used regularly you may become dependent on these over the counter or prescription medications.

Some of you can pin point your allergies rather quickly when your eyes well up when you are around the offender such as cats, trees budding out in April, or ragweed in September. But many times the problem is not so obvious.

Before you turn to medications again, out of habit or lack of knowledge for a better way, here are some valuable pieces of information that may kick your allergies in the butt, naturally. Many of you, but not all, could get some real relief for good. Mineral deficiencies and dehydration problems are common among the masses in the U.S. population.

Perhaps, it is not an unlikely accident that there are other conditions that are also associated with mineral deficiencies as well such as asthma, fibromyalgia, headaches and migraines, attention deficit disorders, and mitral valve prolapse. These conditions often occur in clusters together within the same individual, and may be a red flag marker. Experimenting, by using a simple inexpensive mineral supplement like coral calcium may produce some surprising results.

Quite by accident I read a book called "The Calcium Factor" by Robert Barefoot and Carl Reich M.D. After reading this book I decided to experiment a little and began taking coral calcium to see what it would do for me, if anything. I noticed rather quickly, among a few other benefits, that this supplement unexpectedly cleared up my allergies.

I applied another piece of sound advice I gained from another book called, "Your Body's Many Cries For Water" by F. Batmanghelidj M.D, by drinking my body's daily requirement in pure water. I also added some unrefined salt, rich in natural minerals, to the water intake and ultimately cured my allergies for good! That has been four years ago.

One last added tip on this subject, get out into the sunshine and add some natural vitamin D to the mix. When it is not seasonally available try using a nutritional form of this vitamin, such as cod liver oil. Many coral calcium supplement companies do add it to their product as an added benefit.

What would you not miss about having yearly bouts with your allergy symptoms? Having your head clear up nicely and be back in the game of life again, or having a little more disposable income to spend on other things besides allergy medications and doctor visits? May be both, right? I am sure both of these ideas would not hurt your feelings to much.

Water, salt, minerals, and sunshine could very well be your allergies worst enemies and become your best friends.

How to live longer by eating the right foods

When you begin aging you have continue to eat the right foods in order to remain healthy. If you do not have the right sort of diet, your body does not get the right nutritional balance it needs to stay healthy as you grow older.Your body uses food that helps it make energy, making it run properly. Too much food will not help your body and not enough of the right foods can lead to health problems.

Which foods should you be eating:

You would be mistaken to assume all food is good for you. Even apparently healthy foods like liver , which provides iron should be eaten in moderation as too much iron can actually be quite bad for you. Additional fruit and vegetables should be eaten but again you should be aware that over doing fruits and vegetables can lead to weight gain. One important thing to bear in mind as you get older is your cholesterol levels and you should avoid foods which lead to high cholesterol levels. Cholesterol can lead to hardened arteries the major cause of heart attacks and strokes.

Who or what can tell me if i'm eating right?

When you go to your doctor, he will tell you if you need to go on a diet. Your doctor will be able to tell this by your weight and your height and general health. He may put you on a diet to lose weight or if you are under weight a diet to help you gain weight. He will advise you what to eat and how much, as well as what not to eat. He will also recommend you exercise to burn off excess calories or maintain your weight.

It is important that you should always eat a balanced diet. Try to make sure that you don't over eat and stick to what your diet plan suggests, and additionally make sure you get enough exercise to control your weight or even reduce it. Discuss things with your doctor if you are not sure how much food you should eat or what type of exercise to be doing.

Xylitol's Healthy Sister

Xylose is one of the 8 essential nutrients known as a glyconutrient. The others are:

* Mannose * Glucose * Galactose * Xylose * Fucose (not fructose) * N-acetylglucosamine * N-acetylneuramic acid * N-acetylgalactosamine

Xylose is a saccharide used by the body in cellular communication. It is absorbed into the blood stream through the walls of the small intestine. It is then carried to the liver and metabolized. Other tissues and organs make use of it, for example the kidneys, muscles and fat. A certain amount is excreted in the urine when there is more than the body can use.

Xylose helps the body's immune system fight against infections, disease and toxins. It also helps the digestive tract and enables the body to absorb more nutrients, by helping the growth of "friendly flora" in the intestines. This also helps to strengthen the immune system.

Scientists are studying this important glyconutrient intently, as part of the research known as Glycobiology. Only during the last 10 years has research been done into this vital set of nutrients.

They are part of the complex food group known as carbohydrates. Due to their complexity the carbohydrate food group has been neglected for many years.
It was thought that carbohydrates and sugars were the main culprits in obesity but now we are discovering the enormous benefits to the body of certain carbohydrate group. As well as being the main source of energy to the body other facts are emerging about this food group.

With the advent of technologies like the electron microscope scientists have been able to unlock the various components of Carbohydrates and research into the different elements of the glyconutrients.

Glyconutrients have been found to not only aid the body in its fight against disease and toxins but to have healing properties as well.

The research all began with the examination of the ancient healing plant the Aloe Vera. This plant has been known for centuries for its healing properties and medicinal worth. During the last decade scientists have managed to minutely examine and analyze the ingredients in the plant that have enabled it to be so medicinally beneficial. As they go deeper into glycobiology, more will be discovered about glyconutrients like Xylose.

Mannatech has been a leader in this research and has developed a whole line of nutritional supplements using glyconutrients. One of the most important of these is Ambrotose. This supplement is used widely to ensure that we get enough of these glyconutrients and enable us to improve our health and lead a fuller life.

Note: Glyconutrients are not intended to heal, treat, or cure any disease.

What are Acemannan and Aloe Vera

The aloe vera plant has been known for centuries as the healing plant. Recently, it has been rediscovered and much research has been done on it. Countless examples have indeed shown that it does have the ability to help wounds heal. However, as scientists have done more research on the aloe vera plant, it has been revealed that there are even more benefits to this "miracle" plant than was previously supposed.

The parts from the aloe vera that are used are the gel from its succulent leaves. This is applied to burns and open wounds with varying results. The seeds are also edible.

It also has the ability to help our immune systems and digestive tract. Analysis of the aloe vera plant has shown that one of the reasons for its healing power is that it contains a glyconutrient, in the form of mannose.

Acemannan is a derivative of mannose. It is known as a second-generation glyconutrient agent. It is in fact a polysaccharide made from monosaccharides from the Aloe Vera plant. It can be used in the following forms; powdered saccharide supplements, topical gels, and juice. It contains no fats or proteins. Acemannan is in fact the main ingredient of aloe vera.

Because acemannan is not digestible in the small intestines, it passes straight through to the large intestine. Here it is fermented and broken down by microorganisms. Acemannan helps to stimulate the immune system. It has been found to increase resistance to fungal infections and some flu virus. Tests done in 1997, proved acemannan to be helpful in fighting infections. Tests have also been done to see if Acemannan is effective against some cancers and as a tumor inhibitor.

These tests have been successful with cats and dogs, showing some shrinkage of tumors, but more research work is needed to bring a positive conclusion. The experiments have not been done on human subjects, as yet.

Aloe vera is now found in many cosmetics and is touted as a substance that is good for your skin. It is especially popular in hand and face cream for treatment of dry and cracking skin. It has also found its way into shampoos and soaps. However, the best way to really use this substance is to obtain it directly from the plant. These plants are easy to grow and maintain. They are actually desert succulents; so should not be over watered or exposed to freezing temperatures.

Acemannan itself is available as a diet supplement. As always, with any diet supplement, you should consult your doctor before you start taking it. By in large, there are little or no side effects, but it is always good to be safe.

Mannose Is It Just for UTI

Mannose is one of the 8 Glyconutrients. It helps to build tissues and aids with communication between the cells. It assists the body in strengthening the immune system and repairing itself. Mannose helps the body produce cytokines, which fight off infections and serious diseases. It is found in the leaves of the Aloe Vera plant, which has been used for many centuries to promote the healing of wounds.

Mannose is similar in structure to glucose. It is a sugar compound made up of 6 carbon atoms. It is found in many plant polysaccharides and glycoprotein. Plant polysaccharides are also known as mannans, hence the name for this saccharide Mannose.

The liver in order to make glycoprotein absorbs mannose. It is also absorbed from the intestines walls into the blood stream and lastly into the cells. Glycoform synthesis in mammals uses dietary mannose. Mannose is readily absorbed by the body and clears within several hours. It is made into Glycoprotein in the liver, intestines, brain and even fetus.

People have been taking diet supplements for over 150 years. They were 1st given to sailors in the Royal Navy to prevent scurvy; a disease caused by lack of vitamin C. It was given in the form of lemon or lime juice, as these fruits are rich in vitamin C.

Since then other diet supplements have been developed to aid in prevention of other illnesses and for improvement of health. In 1941 the 1st RDAs were published. They were meant to be a guide for the basic nutrition intake for the public. The Food and Nutrition Board of the U.S. National Research Council published them. In Europe and Canada they publish a similar report.

Since the last 10 years scientists have been researching the carbohydrate group of foods, among them Glyconutrients. Scientists, until recently, have not given any importance to this complex group of foods but now with the advent of Glycobiology (study of Glyconutrients) research is revealing new facts about these vital nutrients.

Diet Supplements are best taken at room temperature with cold water. They will be most effective when taken this way. They are usually taken on a daily basis. It is important to take these supplements with your doctor's advice. Supplements cannot cure diseases but they can help the body protect and heal itself better.
Taking these glyconutritional supplements will help you to improve your health and well being. In today's busy world it is important that we try to maintain our health and we can do this with the help of supplements such as glyconutrients.

Note: Glyconutrients are not intended to heal, treat, or cure any disease.

Natural Weight Loss Tips

Eat Healthy on the Town

At one time, having dinner on the town was a rare treat. Every few weeks, the entire family would jump in the car and drive to the local restaurant to "give mom a break". Times have changed. These days, restaurant food is an everyday fact of life for many busy people. We stop for burgers or salads at lunch time, and visit the drive-thru on the way home. Our non-stop lifestyles demand the instant meal gratification that only restaurants can deliver.

There's no doubt that fast food can be a real boon to our busy schedules. Still, we need to wonder if all of this convenience is taking a toll on our health. Is it possible to eat restaurant food, and stay on a healthy course?

Go for the Greens

You can't deny that greens and other fresh vegetables are a great diet choice. But, did you know that you may not necessarily be doing your body a favor when you order that salad for lunch or dinner? If you have rich dressing on your salad, you're taking a real calorie wallop. Choose low-fat dressing, or take the dressing on the side. Then, use as little as necessary. This same rule works for other sauces too, so try it next time you order your fries with gravy.

Grill Up Some Goodness

Fried foods are laden with nasty fats, so why settle for fried foods when you can have your meats and veggies grilled, baked, broiled, poached or steamed. These cooking methods use little or no fat, and are much lower in calories. When foods are grilled, the natural flavors are greatly enhanced, and there is little need for rich butters, gravies and sauces. You can whittle away even more fats and calories by having the chef grill your foods without additional oil or butter. The food will be delicious and only your hips will know the difference.

Healthy Pastabilities

Think you can't incorporate your love of pasta with your healthy diet? Think again. You can eat pasta, so long as you stay away from those rich, cream-based sauces. Try a zesty fresh tomato-based sauce, instead of a rich alfredo sauce that will wreak havoc on your waistline. Tomato sauces are light, low-fat ways to bring your pastas to life, and will add a vegetable count to your food wheel. Add a sprinkling of cheese and spices for a truly delicious meal.

Drink To Your Health

Alcoholic beverages are not your best choice as meal accompaniments. Instead, order a glass of water, milk or juice, or a cup of tea. Soft drinks are also bad choices. Your value meal may come with a cup of pop, but you aren't obligated to accept it. Ask for an alternative beverage, and be willing to pay the extra quarter for a glass of milk. Your bones will thank you for it.

Start Smart

A little meal before your meal can be a great idea. Soups are sensational appetizers, as most are low in calories and take the edge off of your hunger before the main course arrives. Watch out for cream soups and chowders that are loaded with fat and calories. You can even eat two appetizers, a soup and salad perhaps, instead of one large main-course meal. You'll eat less and save money.

Sensible Sides

If you are offered a choice of side dishes, choose fresh vegetables or a baked potato instead of french fries. Baked potatoes are great side orders, provided they're not weighed down with butter, bacon, cheese, or sour cream. Ask for a side order of salsa to give your spud a healthy kick of flavor.

Fiber First

Fiber is so important to your healthy diet, so be sure to include servings of fruits and vegetables every day. These are essential sources of natural fiber that your body just can't do without. Ask your server for brown rice, whole grain bread and whole wheat pasta. Break all the bread you want, but hold the butter.

Know When to Say No

Stop eating when you feel full. Sound a little too obvious? Not for those people who insist on getting "their money's worth" from their restaurant meals. Heed your belly, and know when you've had enough. Go ahead and ask for a doggy bag. Half of tonight's pasta will make a fantastic lunch tomorrow.

Share the Sweetness

What's better than a devastatingly delicious dessert? Half of one! Go ahead and give in to your dessert craving, and then give half of it to your companion. That caramel pecan cheesecake will be every bit as delicious when you share it with a friend, and you'll only be getting half the calories. If sweet and sensible is more your style, order a fruit salad, yogurt, or sorbet for dessert.

You should make healthy choices when you're on the run, but it's also OK to treat yourself now and then. If you're celebrating a special event and you want melted butter with your lobster, go right ahead. All types of foods can find a place in a well-balanced diet. Don't deprive yourself of the foods you really love. Your time is precious, after all, so enjoy every minute of it.

How to Make Healthy Uncooked Soups

Food is devitalized when it is subject to excessive heat and chemical processing. It loses no value when it is air dried, frozen, warmed, smoked, or pickled with natural spices, organic substances, salt and water; nor when it is transported, or gathered unripe.

Take the so-called "staff of life" - bread. To begin with, the wheat has been so denatured through refining that most of its vital substances have been destroyed. Then it is baked in overheated ovens and the removal of what was left of vital substances is completed.

All the added vitamin pills cannot take the place of the natural ones that have been destroyed.

Enjoy the following soups which all are full of valuable vitamins for vibrant good health. None of these vitamins have been destroyed by cooking!

Tomato Soup

6 ripe tomatoes
1 tablespoon grated onion or scallion
2 cups water
Dash of oregano
1 basil leaf
3 tablespoons olive oil
Coarse salt and red crushed pepper, as desired

Since B vitamins are water soluble, soups are valuable reservoirs of the vegetable elements. Vitamin B tomatoes help keep the small blood vessels and gum tissue firm.

Liquefy the tomatoes in an electric mixer. Add onion and seasonings, then water. WARM, DO NOT COOK!

Vegetable Soup

3 cups liquefied tomatoes (fresh)
1 carrot grated No vitamin shortage here!
1 cup fresh green peas, or frozen peas
1/2 cup raw potato, diced
1 stalk celery leaves
2 tablespoons chopped parsley
1 green pepper, diced
1 basil leaf
1 teaspoon oregano
3 tablespoons olive oil
1/2 cup raw oatmeal
1 or 2 cups water
1/2 teaspoon coarse salt and red crushed pepper, as desired

Heat the liquefied tomatoes with water; add oil, vegetables, and seasonings. At the very end of warming, mix in the raw oatmeal. This provides a bit of thickening and excellent flavor. Keep stirring over heat until hot. (3 to 5 minutes)

Minestrone

6 fresh ripe tomatoes
2 scallions, chopped
1 green pepper, diced
2 stalks celery, cut up with leaves
Dash oregano
1 basil leaf
1/2 teaspoon coarse salt and
1/4 teaspoon red crushed pepper
3 tablespoons olive oil
1 or 2 cups hot water
Spaghettini, fine noodles or
little bits of macaroni

The Italian flair in soup.

Sear very quickly the scallions, green pepper, and celery leaves in 1 tablespoon olive oil. Combine all of these vegetables with the noodles, seasonings, oil, and hot water. Heat until hot, careful not to cook. May be served with grated cheese, Parmesan type. Soak the noodles in hot water with salt for about five minutes.

Chicken Soup

4 cups chicken soup stock, or chicken powder or bouillon
1 carrot, grated
1 onion, grated
1 stalk celery leaves, minced
1 bay leaf
1 basil leaf
1 sprig of parsley
Coarse salt and pepper, as desired

Mineral values here and the added vegetables combine to make this rich in vitamins A, B and C. Both body and energy building. A treat for the palate.

Make chicken stock out of wings, neck, and entrails by simmering together with onions and celery for about 5 minutes. Strain the liquid stock and add to the raw chopped or liquefied vegetables. Throw away the chicken and the vegetables that have been simmered. Warm the chicken stock and add the raw vegetables when about to serve.

Green Pea Soup

2 cups fresh peas in season, or fresh frozen
3 cups water
1 scallion, chopped fine
2 slices Canadian bacon
2 tablespoons olive oil
Coarse salt and red crushed pepper, as desired

Phosphorus here, good for bones. Fresh peas are high in Vitamins A, B and C.

Liquefy the green peas with a little water in an electric mixer. Warm in a pan the Canadian bacon. Mix the bacon and its own fat with the olive oil and the scallion and heat the entire mixture with the liquefied peas. Add water until you reach desired thickness. Add seasonings to taste.

Enjoy these soups both as a taste treat and as something beneficial to your health.
